The reactor of Unit 4 of Beloyarsk NPP in Sverdlovsk Region is to commission in the first quarter of 2013, Dmitry Zverev, the Director General of OKBM Afrikantov in Nizhniy Novgorod, told journalists. The enterprise acts as the designer and package supplier of the fast neutron reactor BN-800 for Beloyarsk NPP, according to Zverev. The reactor will be assembled on site because it is of a large size, Zverev noted.

He also said that by date about 50% of the reactor and power unit had been supplied. Late 2009, OKBM Afrikantov carried out one of the key operations, i.e. reactor assembling. In October this year the reactor pressure vessel is to undergo pressure tests, then filling-up of its circuits will follow. The next stage will be the charging the core with fuel and the first criticality. “This is planned for the first quarter of 2013,” Zverev clarified.

The OKBM Director General noted that BN-800 reactor under construction at Beloyarsk NPP is a large power reactor of 860 MW. This is the fast neutron reactor which allows involving all uranium isotopes in the electricity generation process. “In future, this will allow building up rather large inventories of fuel, to last for nearly hundreds of year ahead," Zverev noted.

The head of the Experimental Design Bureau of Machine-building noted that the company had started building BN-800 after a 30-year interruption. Before that it designed BN-600 reactor. “The contract to supply equipment for Beloyarsk NPP was signed in 2006 and we were faced by grave difficulties in the first year associated with regaining the technologies. Now, we have regained these and will finish the reactor equipment supplies in 2011,” he said.
