In accordance with the previously agreed appointment between the State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM and the Ministry for Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI), TENEX organized a delegation of Russian technical experts in the fields of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management and NPP decommissioning to Japan in the beginning of December, 2016. The Russian delegation was composed of representatives from ROSATOM, Pilot and Demonstration Center for Decommissioning of Uranium and Graphite Nuclear Reactors (PDC UGR), FSUE RosRAO, V.G. Khlopin Radium Institute and National Scientific and Research Center Kurchatov Institute.
During a technical tour of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP site, the Russian experts had an opportunity to experience and observe the current situation and measures of recovery from the accident caused by the tsunami after the great earthquake back in March, 2011. Also under the support of METI, information exchange about potential areas of cooperation with the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.(TEPCO) with participation of the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation (NDF) were held.
During the discussion, the parties mutually expressed their interest to continue the dialog for the future and promised to discuss extensively technical issues and solutions. The parties also stated that they intend to exchange information on a wide range of topics related to the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP.
The parties will start to exchange information from the beginning of 2017.
