November 13, 2020, Ankara, Turkey - Nuclear Regulatory Board has approved the construction license for the third power unit in favor of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC.

The license application package was submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) on March 28, 2019. After examining the application documentation, the Nuclear Regulatory Board adopted Resolution No. 2020-71/2-1 of 13/11/2020 to approve the Construction License of the third unit of Akkuyu NPP. Construction License will allow to proceed with the construction of all facilities of the third unit within the scope of nuclear safety such as reactor and turbine buildings and to perform construction and installation works at the facilities having impact on the nuclear safety. The Limited Work Permit for the third power unit was approved on July 23, 2020.

"Obtaining the construction license is the final licensing stage in the process of the start of the construction of a power unit. Together with design organizations, we have performed an enormous amount of work for preparation of the application documents and replies to the Nuclear Regulatory Authority's questions in the course of the application review. By issuing the license, NRA confirms conformance of the all legal requirements and standards governing the construction and installation work at the third unit of Akkuyu NPP. Currently, within the scope of the limited work permit obtained earlier, we are completing a concrete pad under the foundation slabs of the reactor building and the turbine building at the third unit of Akkuyu NPP. Then,  reinforcement works will be carried out, following which in accordance with the newly obtained license, we will commence foundation concrete works" noted Alexey Frolov, Managing Director for GR and International Cooperation of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC.

As of today, the following key licenses and permits within the scope of implementation of the Akkuyu NPP Project have been obtained: approval of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report, electricity generation license, construction licenses of the first, second and third units and temporary operating permit of the Eastern Cargo Terminal. Akkuyu NPP fourth unit construction license application package is currently being reviewed by the NRA. The application was submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Authority on May 12, 2020.
