The joint Russia-IAEA Nuclear Energy Management School for Managers in Nuclear Organizations concluded in Sochi on  April 19.
The objective of the NEM School was to support middle-level managers and decision-makers in the nuclear sector in enhancing managerial and technical competencies that are essential for establishing or expanding national nuclear energy programmes.
This year hit a record high in the number of participants – 39 management professionals in nuclear organizations from 19 Member States. The role of the executive NEM School director on the IAEA part was given to Mr Mikhail Chudakov, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Energy.
The NEM School covered a broad range of subjects on the potential topical areas of international cooperation, leadership and management, energy planning, nuclear law, nuclear safety and security, as well as nuclear safeguards. A business simulation game “International NPP sales negotiations. Risk sharing and search for a balance of interests” organized within the NEM School programme provided participants with the opportunity to conduct negotiations on the implementation of a nuclear power plant construction project representing one of a given stakeholder role.
The NEM School programme was an effective supplement to the business programme of the XI International Forum ATOMEXPO-2019. The School participants attended round table sessions and visited the exhibition where leading companies from the global nuclear industry and related sectors presented their technologies and competencies.
For reference:
The IAEA Nuclear Energy Management Schools have been regularly conducted since 2010. The NEM School programme is a one-week (middle and top managers) or two-week (promising students) certified training event. It provides a broad perspective on areas relevant to nuclear technology, nuclear safety, safety culture, nuclear licensing and regulation, nuclear legislation, risk management, lessons learned from the nuclear accidents, physical protection and safeguards.
The first joint Russia-IAEA NEM School was conducted in 2016 at the St. Petersburg branch of Rosatom Technical Academy. Starting from 2017, NEM Schools in Russia have been conducted within the framework of the Agreement between ROSATOM and IAEA concerning Extra budgetary Contribution to the implementation of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Projects on nuclear infrastructure development in newcomer countries. In 2019, in pursuance of agreements with the IAEA Secretariat, two more Russia-IAEA Schools will be held at the Rosatom Technical Academy – NEM School for Young Professionals and Nuclear Knowledge Management School.
