On April 17-19, the World Nuclear Fuel Cycle-2018 (WNFC) international conference organized by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and the World Nuclear Association (WNA) takes place in Madrid. ROSATOM is the event’s partner.

At the Conference it was announced that Kirill Komarov, First Deputy Director General for Corporate Development and International Business of ROSATOM, assumed the office of the Chairman of the WNA Board of Management.

Current issues of the nuclear fuel cycle (NFC) development and commercialization were at the top of the conference’s agenda for the representatives of the world leading nuclear industry companies.

“Nuclear energy and technologies hold great opportunities to meet the global sustainable development challenges. Today the industry needs to develop new technologies at all stages of the life cycle to improve its economic efficiency and achieve the international goals to reduce CO2 emissions”, the head of ROSATOM’s regional center in Western Europe Andrey Rozhdestvin noted.

According to the company’s representative, the NFC closure will be the next step for the global nuclear industry development. Russia nowadays creates the technological base to provide a practical solution for the closure of NFC with fast neutron reactors as the cornerstone of this process. Furthermore, Russia is continuing the testing of REMIX fuel that can be reprocessed several times and can significantly increase the effectiveness of uranium usage in light-water reactors. Another important project of the Russian nuclear industry in the field of NFC is the development of the accident tolerant fuel.

Mikhail Baryshnikov, the representative of TENEX, industrial integrator of international sales in the field of the back-end sector, presented the topic devoted to the development of the innovative technologies for the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and radioactive waste (RW) management and the prospects for their commercialization. As it was highlighted by the speaker, “ROSATOM's technologies for managing SNF and RW, including waste fractionation, allow the company to return to its customers only the intermediate level waste (ILW) which does not require deep underground containment”.

For reference:

ROSATOM is the Russian Federation national nuclear corporation that brings together more than 300 nuclear industry companies and R&D institutions. With 70+ years of experience in the nuclear field, ROSATOM works on a global scale to provide comprehensive nuclear services that range from uranium enrichment to NPP construction. ROSATOM is the world’s leader in nuclear new build, implementing projects to construct 6 reactors in Russia and 33 abroad.

ROSATOM Western Europe is a regional office of ROSATOM, established in Paris to support the operations of the group’s subsidiaries in the region.

JSC “Techsnabexport” (trade mark TENEX) is one of the world's largest suppliers of nuclear fuel cycle products that provide a significant part of the needs of reactors of foreign design in uranium enrichment services. TENEX is a part of ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation.
