The Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK) has provided Akkuyu NPP, that implements the first nuclear power plant project in Turkey, with a Limited Work Permit for the construction of Unit 2 of Akkuyu NPP
The issuance of the Limited Work Permit (LWP) resulted from thorough review and assessment by TAEK of the package of documents submitted and is an important stage in the licensing of Akkuyu NPP Unit 2 construction.
“When obtaining the Limited Work Permit and the Main License for the construction of Unit 1 the team of the project company AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC has profoundly explored the requirements for documentation, the rules for submission of documents. And our specialists could fully capture the practice and lessons learned for the efficient team work when preparing and submitting documents for the LWP for Unit 2”, said Anastasia Zoteeva, Chair of the Board of Directors of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC.
The package of documents prepared and submitted by AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC to TAEK for obtaining the LWP for Akkuyu NPP Unit 2 comprises: Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR), Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA) of Akkuyu NPP, as well as a number of other documents confirming safety of the power unit.
The Limited Work Permit allows proceeding with the construction and installation works at facilities of the Unit except for that which are important for nuclear island safety. Excavation of the foundation pit, engineering surveys and other activities will commence under the LWP. It is a significant milestone in project implementation. After having received the LWP the project company AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC has to get the Construction License and start concrete pouring of the foundation slab; and that will signify a formal start of construction activities at Unit 2 of Akkuyu NPP.
For the reference:
The Akkuyu NPP is the project for construction of the first NPP in Turkey and is implemented on the basis of the Intergovernmental Agreement signed between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Turkey in May 2010. VVER-1200 power units of Akkuyu NPP are based on Generation 3+ technologies that are the most modern technologies with enhanced safety systems meeting all existing requirements. This is a serial Russian nuclear power plant project based on the project of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (Russia, Voronezh Region), the first unit of which was put into commercial operation on February 27, 2017. When the construction of the Akkuyu NPP with an installed capacity of 4,800 MW is completed, it will generate about 35 billion kWh electricity per year. Its service life will be 60 years with the possibility of extension for another 20 years. The majority shareholder of the Akkuyu NPP is the Russian State Corporation Rosatom. The project is implemented under the BOO (build-own-operate) model. Under the project contract, which is a long-term agreement, AKKUYU NUCLEAR, the project’s contractor, has assumed the roles of design, construction, maintenance, operation and decommissioning of the plant.
