Siberian Anthracite JSC (part of Sibanthracite Group) signed a three-year contract with Novosibirskenergosbyt JSC for the purchase of energy generated by NovaWind wind farms in the Stavropol Krai and Adygea. Electricity generated from renewable energy sources is confirmed by I-REC green certificates.
The company will become the first coal mining company in Russia to purchase wind-generated electricity and fully cover energy needs from renewable energy sources. Thus, it will significantly reduce indirect greenhouse gas emissions. Green energy supplies will start on January 1, 2022.
The company’s transition to renewable electricity with a total consumption of about 56.6 million kWh per year will reduce indirect greenhouse gas emissions from 17.8 thousand tons of CO2 per year (according to Enerdata information on average emission intensity in the Russian energy sector) to 49.6 thousand tons of CO2 per year (according to EBRD data on emission intensity of the united energy system of Siberia).
“NovaWind is consistently implementing the Rosatom strategy for low-carbon energy production based on nuclear and wind power generation. Currently, more and more companies are choosing the path to sustainable development and implementing corporate social responsibility strategies in accordance with major international standards. NovaWind contributes to reducing carbon footprint in the Russian energy sector and provides partners with additional tools to achieve sustainable development goals,” said Grigory Nazarov, Deputy CEO for Development and International Business, NovaWind JSC.
“Switching to renewable green energy is part of the Group's Integrated Carbon Footprint Assessment Program. We are proud that Siberian Anthracite is the first coal mining enterprise in our country that will fully cover its needs through renewable energy sources,” says Sergey Melnikov, CEO, Sibanthracite Management Company.
In the future, Sibanthracite Group is considering the possibility of using renewable energy at other enterprises of the group – Vostochny Open-Pit Mine (Novosibirsk region) and Kiyzassky Open-Pit Mine (Kemerovo region). All investment projects of the company will also be planned taking into account the possibilities of using "green" energy.
