ROSATOM’s digital ambitions are the technological leadership both in the Russian market and in the world. They are based on 75 years of the nuclear industry history. Over this time, the industry has accumulated vast experience in finding high-quality solutions to hardest technology problems.

All processes of digital transformation and digitalization of ROSATOM are based on the Uniform Digitalization Strategy (UDS). Approved in November 2018 and updated taken account of the market performance and measurements in December 2019, UDS includes three important areas:

supercomp_sarov.jpg

First: participation in the digitalization of Russia. We have become the center of competences of the Federal Project Digital Technologies within the National Program Digital Economy.

Second: digital products. We develop high-technology solutions not only for nuclear power but also for other sectors of economy.

Third: internal digitalization. We strive to set in the sector the uniform digital architecture, which is independent from foreign technologies in critical areas (based on our own IT solutions) with clear-cut focus on economic effect.

In 2019, to implement UDS, ROSATOM formed the Digitalization Block, which includes Digital Transformation Department and Information Technology Department of ROSATOM, Project Office Digital Economy of Russia, JV Kvant Ltd., Information Technology Department of Greenatom JSC, Process Architecture Center based at JSC PSR and two subsidiary companies. The first one, Cifrum, concentrates centers of digital competences of the sector. The second company, Rusatom Digital Solutions, is a trading house for selling digital products and solutions.

It is important to note that ROSATOM earlier developed projects in the sphere of high technologies. In particular, RFNC VNIIEF (Sarov, Nizhniy Novgorod Region) has organized a series manufacture of small-size supercomputers both super power and low power class. They were used to solve problems of science-intensive sectors of industry at enterprises of nuclear power, Roscosmos, PJSC Sukhoi UDB and other large companies. Along with RFNC VNIIEF, one more enterprise of the sector, Zababakhin VNIITF (Snezhinsk, Chelyabinsk Region), holds leadership positions in developing domestic supercomputers.

There were other interesting developments in different divisions, but only with approval of the Uniform Digital Strategy the approach to digitalization problems has become more extensive and the plans have become ambitious.

Even individually, ROSATOM’s companies have achieved a lot; they have IT solutions of the world level. But now, it is high time to act in step and move to a new level together.

Responsibility for federal projects

In 2019, ROATOM become the center of competences of the Federal Project Digital Technologies within the National Program Digital Economy. Seven roadmaps of through digital technologies in Russia have been developed and approved with extensive participation of ROSATOM as a responsible contractor. More than 600 of especially invited experts took part in their development. ROSATOM bears responsibility for two most important roadmaps: Quantum Computations (development of the quantum computer) and New Production Technologies (jointly with Rostech JSC).

Quantum computers are a new generation of computing devices, which are thousand times more powerful than existing ones. Implicitly, they are designed for solving problems which are undoable today, in particular, in the spheres of cyber security, artificial intelligence and simulation of new materials. The development of the Russian quantum computer is one of the strategic tasks of Russia digitalization. The response to that challenge is called for to close the gap between world technological leaders.

Being responsible for the given area, ROSATOM acts as the organizer of the uniform “ecosystem” of different development centers research institutes, technological start-ups and university laboratories for effective coordination of cooperative activities. One of the leaders in this area – Dukhov VNIIA – operates directly in the ROSATOM’s system. Partnerships are also created with the research and education center Functional Micro and Nano-systems of Bauman MSTU, MISiS and Russian Quantum Center which support scientific ties with leading scientists across the world. The key goal is to produce a 100-cubit quantum computer by 2024.

New digital products

The product launch of digital products is one of three key components of the Uniform Digital Strategy. The sector has successfully introduced various internal solutions based on information technologies – the tools for design, management of full lifecycle of complex items, and processes.

Today, for us, the key priority is to unite the sectoral experience and move from local IT systems to development of digital products not only for nuclear power but also for other sectors of economy.

ROSATOM’s product portfolio structure is based on five priority areas: Science-intensive Modeling and R&D, Management of an Enterprise and Productions, Digital Infrastructure, Design and Construction/Digital Twins and Information and Physical Digital Security.

Each of the five areas has its own standard-bearer. They were developed by different divisions and enterprises of ROSATOM, and their first customers were the leading industrial, power engineering and oil & gas companies, which are the leaders of strategic sectors of the Russian economy. In 2018-2019, our digital products were officially launched into new commercial markets across all portfolio segments.

All-in-all, at the beginning of 2020, there were 149 developments in the digital products register, of which 39 were created by third parties which were ROSATOM’s partners.

ROSATOM’s digital products in five areas in brief:

Science-intensive Modeling and R&D

Logos

Logos is a package of three digital products developed based on ROSATOM’s multi-year hardware & software developments. Each module of the family is designed for solving engineering tasks in a specific area. In fact, Logos has become the first digital product by ROSATOM that was officially launched into the Russian market. The project has a great history. It took nearly 10 years to make it a scaled software package; the development was initiated in RFNC VNIIRF back in 2009.

Logos Aero-Gidro is designed for modeling of processes in air and water media. Logos-Teplo is to assess thermal characteristics and modes of parts and units. Logos Prochnost is to solve static and dynamic strength problems.

Products by Logos have been already integrated at more than 70 enterprises of various sectors of the industry, i.e. aircraft engineering, engine manufacture, transportation machine engineering and nuclear power.

Volna

Volna is one more new digital product of the engineering analysis. This hardware & software complex was developed by RFNC VNIITF in cooperation with Gazprom and was officially launched in Moscow in December 2019. This was the way by which ROSATOM’s gas dynamics competences have found their efficient use in the new essential non-nuclear area: the gas line operation.

Volna main task is the planning of gas mains in a non-stationary mode, i.e. in natural gas bleed and pump conditions. Users can not only view on-line all operations with data but also introduce changes in calculations. At this, the calculations consider the terrain which substantially affects pressure in the pipe. Lastly, the new product is applied not only as a tool of modelling but also as a simulator for training of operators.

At the present time, Volna is used in four of 15 gas-transporting companies of Gazprom. Experts evaluate further implementation prospects as rather high. The software complex supports also operation of the natural gas pipeline Sila Sibiri commissioned in December 2019.

Management of an Enterprise and Productions

Prizma 2.0

Prizma 2.0 is a domestic automated system for managing discrete production that takes account of features of production activities of ROSATOM’s enterprises, DIC enterprises and civil industries. It has been developed by Dukhov VNIIA. The developers have registered more than 14 invention certificates for components of applied software ASMDP Prizma. The system is designed for the use at instrument engineering enterprises of DIC and civil industries which are similar to production features of NDC enterprises. First several cases of introduction ASMDP Prizma in the sector lead to conclusion that it complies with technological, functional and organizational requirements. Main advantages of the system are the compliance with requirements of information security, independence from vendors, high level of availability to fast implementation.

The project to develop and implement Prizma system became the winner of the competition The Project of 2015 (in the nomination Independent Invention) on the web-portal GlobalCIO. Also, Prizma is the winner of the competition Comnews-2018 in the nomination The Best Solution for Discrete Production Sectors.

Digital Infrastructure

Data Processing Centers (DPC)

One of the priority development areas of digital products of ROSATOM is the development of data processing centers (DPCs). In the framework of the program for digitalization of main processes and architecture of enterprises, ROSATOM has developed several models of such highly efficient data processing centers. The major area is backbone DPCs, which are part of the global data center network wired to NPPs. Also, complexes with a capacity from 5 up to 150 kW have been commissioned: modular DPC, high-load DPC, mobile DPC, container DPC and even micro DPC.

The data processing centers which can be placed within a NPP have a substantial competitive advantage: stability of power supply and compliance with hard safety and security requirements (at the expense of multi-barrier safety and security ensuring of the industrial site). In 2019, in Udomlya (Tver Region), the first such project, DPC Kalininskiy, was put into operation jointly with Rostelekom. This is one Russia’s largest center which has a design capacity of 48 MW.

While successfully ensuring physical security and uninterruptible equipment operation, DPCs are called for to increase digitalization rate of internal processes and programs to replace imported products of ROSATOM. DPCs are designed for ROSATOM’s different divisions such as IT services of enterprises which are engaged in IT development and operation of systems, store and process data bulks. They are also designed for sectoral companies, which are entrusted with building and expanding IT architecture. With that, ROSATOM’s DPCs are ready to render similar service to an external client on commercial basis. For example, the first client of DPC Kalininskiy has become the Administration of Tver Region.

Automated Tool Storing and Accounting System

The automated system developed by FSPC PA Start is a convenient and clear service in the Smart Cabinet category, which illustrates how production technologies can be applied at an enterprise. It consists of the tools release module, tools collection module and control module. The system traces in real time and controls release and return of tools by the enterprise’s employees. Open interfaces of the device protocols allow for easy and fast integrating into the information media of any enterprise. An employee is identified using a key with a bar code or log-in-password. Connection to tool release and collection modules is carried out by RS-485 interface, and the integration with the enterprise management system devices is carried out by Ethernet. The authorization of the system users is integrated in the corporate framework ActiveDirectory or OpenLDAP, and does not require additional licensing payments. Shareware system and applied software, logging of piecemeal release of mills process, monitoring of tools availability. The implementation of the system offers to improve labor productivity and optimize warehouse keeping.

Design and Construction

Digital Platform Multi-D

The digitalization of the sector sets new requirements for production design and organization. Clients expect from contractors that they will carefully control time of design and construction, cost reduction, increase in quality and environmental friendliness. ROSATOM’s Engineering Division (JSC EC АО ASE) has introduced the term Multi-D which means design in 3 dimensions plus control of time, physical volumes, resources and costs. The Multi-D innovative technology includes: 3D – special model of the construction object; 4D – work schedule (time); 5D – physical volumes (material resources); 6D – staff resources (man-assignment schedule); 7D – non-working resources (machines and mechanisms) and 8D – cost of construction. Multi-D ensures building up and supporting an updated information model of the object through accumulation and modification of data and knowledge at the stage of its design and construction. The modern client needs the information model not only for construction of the object but for using it afterwards.

Thus, the unique system Multi-D, which has been developed and improved during recent 10 years, allows for efficient management of all stages of the NPP lifecycle as well as other complex civil construction facilities. The platform is developed using the principle of maximum independence from export-import restraints for software, as well as the principle of modularity and versatility; the client still has the opportunity to link components of other vendors or national program solutions. In particular, the special system of project management based on the technology Multi-D using solutions of Dassault Systemes and its platform has been developed. This version of the system won the first award at the international exhibition in Le Burge (France).

The Multi-D tools are continuously developing and improving. Today, the platform in different configurations has been implemented and is successfully operated at the following nuclear power plants being constructed by ROSATOM: El Dabaa NPP (Egypt), Paks NPP II (Hungary), Kudamkulam NPP (India), Rooppur NPP (Bangladesh), and Kursk NPP-2. The system of project management Multi-D at Rostov NPP was acknowledged the best in the nomination “Mega-Project Multi-Roadmap Element” in the international contest CETI AWARD 2016.

On-line Shop of Technical Documentation

Built up by JSC Concern Rosenergoatom, the on-line shop of technical documentation is a modern on-line service for search, order and receipt of legal regulatory, scientific and design technical documentation, which regulates all stages of lifecycle of NPPs with VVER reactors. The product has been history-steeped; the documentation framework started to be built up commencing the start-up of Novovoronezh NPP in 1964. And in 2015, JSC Concern Rosenergoatom received a request from the Joint Coordinating Board of Russia-Belarus to provide more than 700 documents (30 551 pages). This induced specialist of Rosenergoatom to apply new digital solutions. That is why this product is, in fact, unique; it merges modern technologies with the sector’s classical ones and continuously keeps up to date gathering new documents, i.e. drawings, schemes, calculations, which book value is RUB billions. As of the beginning of 2020, the shop has posted more than 1,100 technical documents (over 75,000 pages) with abstracts. Their total cost exceeds RUB 420 million. Foreign customers may buy documents in English.

Information and Physical Digital Security

Access Monitoring and Control System (AMCS) Pilot

The access monitoring and control system Pilot is a respected and successful product, which was used in one of the large-scale sports events in the history of our country that is the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The system is designed to check in real time passes of visitors using bar codes or RFID-based technologies who access secured facilities and territories where public events are carried out. With that, all facts and attempts of such access are recorded and detailed reports on recorded events are formed. AMCS is a distributed information system covering structures in different cities, for example, stadiums. And the integration into the project Smart City allows receiving all information about public event visits in real time to make managerial decisions.

Let’s come back to the World Cup. Long before it, all systems successfully passed the tests at the Winter Olympics 2014 in Sochi and the Confederations Cup 2017. Following these test results, the system Pilot was installed and made a good showing at stadiums across Russia. In December 2019, NIKIRET (an enterprise of ROSATOM) was awarded for implementation of AMSC Pilot in the nomination Contribution to Technology Development at the Forum Global Technological Leadership. The same year, the system showed itself to advantage at the Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk.

Prospects and Education

ROSATOM continuously refills the digital projects range. For example, until now there were no domestic tools of the world class in the market, which could do supercomputer physical and mathematical modeling calculations. The unique experience of nuclear workers in computational modeling of dynamics of gases, fluids and temperatures today is efficiently packed in digital products of Logos series, which are necessary for engineers of other branches of industry.

One more example is access switches; the world suppliers are dominating at the Russian market now. The Fuel Company of ROSATOM TVEL, which has accumulated high technological potential, has undertaken manufacturing of domestic analogs.

One of the key products in the area Management of an Enterprise and Production is the Full Lifecycle System Digital Enterprise. It is one of the complex and large-scale digital projects of ROSATOM. This is a management complex for enterprises having different types of productions. The ideology of FLCS lays modular organization principle (key modules: Enterprise Management, Production Management and Personnel Management). It should allow implementing the system by parts, as well as giving clients an opportunity of individual development of a product due to delivery of the system in the source code. The product development is planned for several years ahead at the expense of creation and improvement of new modules; the team of developers is continuously growing. Today, the work on the product development is carried out in several development centers in different cities of Russia.

It seems a reasonable guess that the demand for ROSATOM’s digital products will be growing in the process of replacement of imported IT platforms with Russian products (as one of the priority areas of development of digital economy of Russia). Director for Digitalization in ROSATOM Ekaterina Solntseva is sure that ROSATOM’s innovative developments will help large enterprises of Russia in solving problems of design, construction, safety ensuring and operation of high-technology industrial facilities and products. ROSATOM will continue to launch in the market the digital products of the engineering analysis while nailing down step-by-step the status of a leader in this area.

The strategic partnership with ROSATOM has evident advantages. The leader of the world nuclear sector holds stable positions in the market. It is a reliable vendor who guarantees a long-term cooperation. Digital products take account client’s requirements at maximum, and developments use predominantly domestic program components. But the main thing is that while clearly being aware of the level of requirements of the modern digital world to quality of technological solutions, today specialists of different divisions and enterprises of ROSATOM are oriented to development of replicated turn-key products.

It is impossible to launch digital products in the market without a smoothly running education and user support system. The inauguration of the training center within the N. A. Dollezhal Research and Development Institute of Power Engineering (NIKIET) has become one of the key stages of digitalization of ROSATOM. It was opened in October 2019. In the center, numerical simulation specialists from nuclear industry and other industries will be trained in all modules of the software package Logos, in particular, the 3D simulation tool for hydro and gas dynamics processes Logos Aero-Gidro and soon Logos Teplo and Logos Prochnost (it is planned to enter the market in the end of 2020). In future, the number of educational programs of the training center is expected only to grow as to specific products and digital competences.
